So let's get this straight: We wear wool
uniforms that are too cold in winter and too hot in summer. We drink water and
coffee from rusty tin canteens and cups. We shovel horse manure. We sleep on
the ground under thin, too short pieces of canvas and rubberized cloths.
Ticks. Many people think we're weird. Why do we do this?
Well really, it's FUN. Honestly, it
costs enough, takes enough effort, and makes us so different from most
people that it BETTER BE FUN. We wouldn't do it otherwise.
We really love American history. We
feel, after so much study, that we KNOW these people from the 1860's both
good and bad. They're like our relatives or neighbors. They could be us.
We get misty eyed reading and telling about their trials, triumphs,
anguish, loss, sacrifice, and victory.
We put up with horses, at least.
Some of us actually love them.
We feel, quite strongly, a sense of
duty and privilege to remember, commemorate, and honor our American military
personnel, both past and present. Some of us are veterans - some combat
veterans. We know we owe them more than we can ever repay. We thank God
for their contributions.
